12 Month Checkup

We had our 12 month check up with the doctor today!  I am happy to report that all is well, however, Michaela would tell you otherwise if she could.  Four shots does not a happy baby make.  Mommy has done her best to ease the pain, but she's learning that shots are never easy for anyone involved.

Let me just say that I love this doctor we are currently seeing.  He is so kind and patient, and just what I think a pediatrician should be in my mind.  We didn't start out this way, so I am so happy now we have found what we (mostly me) were looking for.

During our last visit he mentioned with the motor skills she's been demonstrating that she might be athletic when she grows up.  That made us very happy to hear, and he mentioned it again today.

Here are her stats at 1 Year:

Weight: 20.5 Lbs. - 23rd Percentile
Height: 29.75 Inches - 50th Percentile

MIA

Wow, I haven't been too good at this blogging thing, have I?  Not only have I not posted anything since January, but I completely missed posting anything about Michaela's turning one year old.  So much for my effort to create a personal memory book.

There is good reason for it, though.  We had a rough start to the year, we lost our 6 year old dog in February to liver disease.  It was hard for all of us, especially mommy, who withdrew from all activities, including the things that make her happiest, like cooking, exercising, and talking about Michaela.

Despite this, I am bound and determined to forge on, keeping this personal journal going for Michaela's sake.  I am happy to say we are all doing much better now, and looking forward to a few things we have in the works.

Michaela's first birthday was fantastic.  We had her party on Saturday, February 19th, and celebrated with lots of family and friends.  I think she kind of "got" what was going on, but who knows?  At the end of the day she was exhausted and so were mom and dad, but I do have to say the party was a great success.  Her actual birthday, February 21, was a low key one.  Luckily it was President's Day, so mommy had the day off work, and daddy took off as well to use up some excess vacation time at work.  We did a little shopping, and celebrated at home quietly with a dinner and of course cake.  Our gift to her was a wooden step stool with her name carved into it, and the letters are puzzle pieces.  I am hoping that it will be something she can keep for years to come, a momento from her first birthday.

Tomorrow is our 12 month check up with the pediatrician (also late but there's good reason for that too).  I will return then with her current stats.

Coin Operated II

We finally caught Kevin's episode of Modern Marvels this past Friday night!  There was a marathon on as we were drifting off to sleep, and I coughed and woke myself up and happened to hear them talking about coin operated machines.  I knew that was the subject of the episode, so I grabbed the remote and looked at the title, and sure enough that was it!  So I hit record on the ol' DVR and woke Kevin up to tell him.  Sadly, we both fell back asleep before his segment came on.  That's what chasing an 11 month old around all day will do to you.  We did pull it up on the DVR the next morning and, to my surprise, he actually appears a lot in the segment, with close ups and everything!

For those that didn't know, during a visit to Wegman's last August we stopped by the wine vending machine to grab a bottle for the evening.  There was a television crew there blocking everything, so we lingered around since we really didn't want to make a separate run to the liquor store for wine.  I assumed it was a local news crew, so I really wasn't shy abouting hiding the fact that I was annoyed with having to wait.  A few minutes later a very well dressed woman came over to us to tell us they were almost finished, and then she mentioned they were looking for volunteers to go on camera and purchase wine from the machine.  Turns out there were filming a segment for Modern Marvels on the History Channel!  I declined, as I felt I wasn't dressed presentably enough to appear on a major TV show, but Kevin was happy and excited to do it!  They filmed him entering his information, breathing into the breathalizer, and selecting the wine.  They took our info down and said they would call with the airing date, which they said would be in November.  Well, we never heard anything and just assumed he didn't make the cut, and we really never thought any more about it.  Then we got a phone call that a family friend saw him on TV, and with a little research we discovered that the episode had aired November 15, 2010.  They never called.

We were searching the guide on our tv programming for the episode to see if it would be on again, but we were able to find anything.  Until now!  I can't believe it!  I've been searching online for a video of the episode but have had no luck.  I will post it if I ever find it.

11 Months

Well today marks Michaela's 11 month milestone.  This photo was taken this past weekend, while I was trying to get some shots to use on her first birthday invitations.  I think this is the one.

As I've mentioned before, she is on her way to walking, but not quite there yet.  She will take a few steps here and there, and then drop down, especially if she knows you're watching her.  Kevin and I have noticed and daycare has mentioned it as well that if you let her go and kind of watch out of the corner of your eye she will take more steps.  I hope to post a good video of this soon.

She is starting to show her temper sometimes, like when she gets into something she not supposed to (the dog's food, liquor cabinet, toilet) and you take her away from it.  I've been trying to offer her something else, like a toy, when this happens, but she is not always interested.  We're trying to teach her the word 'no' but for now she just points and laughs at us when we say it.  She continues to babble and chatter, with da-da being the most common sound coming out.  She laughs a lot more than she used to, usually at the dog or daddy.

We had a check up back at the beginning of January.  It was actually the 9 month one but we are a little behind due to switching doctors and waiting for an appointment.  Which, I am very glad we made the switch because I really like the doctor she is seeing now.  Anyway, at that checkup he was quite pleased with her progress, and commented that we can look for her to be athletic when she gets older.  At that visit, she was approximately 18 pounds and 28 inches long.

She does very well with table food.  Some of the foods we've tried that she loves are pasta, chicken, lasagna, pizza and small dices of fruits and veggies.  She seems to love small veggies she can pick up, like corn and peas.  She loves her water in a sippy cup with a straw and still takes 3 or 4 bottles of breast milk per day.  I am anxious to introduce her to cow's milk but I am not sure when we will do that, as I have heard different things about when to start.

That about does it for our update.  We are in the middle of planning her first birthday festivities.  It will be a fun filled weekend!

A Little History

I guess I should have created this little ongoing project last year when Michaela arrived, instead of doing it close to her first birthday (more on that later).  Of the many things I've learned over the past year one of them is that things usually don't happen the way you plan or want, so I'll just say this is one of those times.  I'll have to play a little catch-up, so that I can give current updates to our family and friends.

Michaela Grace was born on February 21, 2010 at 3:48 am.  She weighed 7 lbs., 7 oz., and was 19.25 inches long.  Kevin and I were very happy to suddenly have become a family of three.  Once we got home from the hospital we were very busy not only with a new daughter, but also with the move to our new home, which took place when Michaela was two weeks old.  Many friends and family members helped us a great deal, and once we were settled, mommy enjoyed 10 weeks of being home taking care of Michaela and unpacking boxes.

Mommy returned to work full time on May 20, and Michaela started daycare.  It is located where mommy works, so she is very close all day and I am very lucky to have that.  There have been a few rough days, but for the most part she has done very well and we are very happy with the quality of care she receives.  She will soon be moving to the one year old room, which I am told is a whole different world, so look out, Sweet Pea.

Michaela was strong and alert from the very beginning, and over the past year she has never ceased to amaze us with the things she can do.  She crawled at 5 months, pulled herself to her feet at 6 months, and right now (at 10 months) she is on her way to taking a few steps on her own.

She has begun to develop her personality, which comes off to me as very adventerous, fearless, and sassy.  She is not afraid to do anything, like diving headfirst off the couch or pulling herself onto her feet in the slippery infant bathtub.  She keeps us very busy, which may be the reason I was never able to start this project.

To our family and friends, please check back often to keep up to date on the adventures of Michaela!

Welcome!

Welcome to our new blog!  We (meaning me, mommy) are starting this project to document important moments and keep up with our family and friends since we live a distance away.  As always, we are very busy as we go about our everyday life, but with this blog we hope to share milestones, events, news, photos, and anything else that may come along!  Thanks for reading!
